A Message from UCMFSG
Dear UCMFSG Members and Friends,
Please take time to read this entire email!
As we approach Veterans Day, please be aware of possible scams concerning support for veterans, and/or first responders. Beware of callers asking for donations on behalf of veterans or first responders, and/or supposed veteran/first responder organizations.
Be aware of calls and emails that suggest they are the Veterans Administration (VA) offering support for veterans, and then asking for personal information to verify who you are. Do not give out your personal info or credit card number over the phone or by email.
Do not donate to any caller, website, or email asking for monetary donations for the Union County Military Family Support Group!! Our 501 (c) (3) Charity will never ask for donations over the phone. Likewise, we do not solicit by snail mail, email, Facebook, nor by newspaper ads. Don't respond to websites which state they are taking donations on our behalf. If you wish to donate towards helping veterans, please contact any of the many local veteran organizations so that your donation truly goes to help local Vets and their families.
With our government shut down, we have many service members (active, reserve, and National Guard), veterans, and their families finding themselves in a financial bind. I suggest that service members/veterans put aside their pride and ask for a helping hand, before they get themselves too deep in debt. I strongly recommend they go to their county Veterans Service Office to see if they are eligible for financial help. Per Ohio Revised Code 5901, every county in Ohio must have a Veterans Service Office, which is a county agency funded by local taxes, for the sole purpose of supporting the veterans in their county. Furthermore, the county VSO's are staffed with professionals, who are trained to help service members, veterans and their families (including widows) file for support from the VA.
As you know, since 2003, the Union County Military Family Support Group is also a local resource that "stands ready" to provide a "helping hand" as needed. Besides emergency financial assistance, we also provide Education Assistance Grants to veterans and/or immediate family members seeking a college degree (BA/BS), or a technical certification. Likewise, we offer the General and Mrs. Decker Scholarships to any qualifying high school graduating senior pursuing a college degree (BA/BS). Grant and Scholarship Qualifications and Applications for 2026 may be downloaded from our website at ucmfsg.com.
Please know that we have homeless veterans in Union County! I am afraid that with the current economy and government shutdown that the number may increase. If you know of a service member, a veteran, and/or a respective family in need of a "helping hand," please refer them to the local VSO, and/or to the UCMFSG!!
Contact the Union County Veterans Service Office at Tel: 937-642-7956.
Contact the Union County Military Family Support Group by email at: bonnells.suffolks@gmail.com.
Please protect yourself from scams, and please help our service members/veterans!!
Sincerely,
Ken Bonnell, Chairman
Union County Military Family Support Group
